Mark 10:43b [Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant…]
Here are 7 characteristics of servant leaders:
- They are not autocratic leaders.
1 Peter 5:3 [Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example.]
- While they are self-motivated, they are not motivated by self interest.
Mark 10:45 [For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.]
- They are hardworking and generous.
Acts 20:35 [In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.]
- They are examples for others.
Hebrews 13:7 [Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.]
- They serve as shepherds over the flock.
1 Peter 5:2 [Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly.]
- They are not ego-driven
Philippians 2:3-8 [Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.]
- They use their time, talent and treasure to help others.
1 Peter 4:10 [As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.]
Dear friend, identify the characteristics you are least proficient in and develop an action plan for their development. Pray and ask God to send people in your life who can help strengthen you in these areas.
