Among the many obstacles to effective leadership is maintaining a level head, particularly as you experience success. Sometimes leadership position alone is enough to cause people to take liberty they would otherwise avoid.
Note the following story entitled, “The Heady Taste of Power.”
A first grader was told to come directly home from school but he arrived late almost every day. The difference in time amounted to as much as 20 minutes. His mother asked him, “You get out of school the same time every day. Why can’t you get home at the same time?” He said, “It depends on the cars.” “What do cars have to do with it?” The youngster explained, “The patrol boy who takes us across the street makes us wait until some cars come along so he can stop them.”
How very easy it is for us to fall victim to leadership stumbling blocks! Consider the following to enhance your leadership skills:
1. Inspire Trust.
Joshua 1:9 – This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
2. Understand the importance of timing.
• Recognize windows of opportunity and seize them.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 – For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.
3. Be tenacious; don’t quit if people don’t instantly follow.
Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
Don’t allow opportunity to serve given you, or title and position, to lure you into a false sense of yourself. Serve the people you lead to the glory of God!
